Members-Only Dispute Tips

Be as specific as possible.
For each item that you dispute, list:

.

The creditor, by the name that appears on your credit report.
. The item that you are disputing. Here too, be specific. Dispute that it is "reported 60 days past due" rather than vague "account information."
. Any comments you can add to clarify or correct the item. If an item is the result of a billing error that you tried to clear up through the creditor, say so, and give details as to who you spoke to and when.

Some people find that putting this information into a table or chart helps them organize their evidence and be particularly thorough.

Enclose a copy of your credit report.
When you mail in your dispute letter, enclose a photocopy of the report containing the inaccuracy, and highlight the item(s) you are disputing. If you are disputing multiple items, you might want to number the items on your report, and then refer to those numbers in your letter by adding "See #1 on copy of report" to your description of the item. This way, the credit reporting agency sees exactly what you saw.

Use the mailing address on your credit report.
The addresses we provide on our Dispute Information page will get your dispute where it needs to go, but in some areas that is a regional office to which your dispute must be forwarded. By writing to the address on your credit report, you ensure that your dispute is going straight to the office that can process it.

Notify the creditor.
In addition to going through the dispute process with the credit reporting agency providing the report with inaccurate information, we recommend that you write to the creditor (bank, department store, or other lender) involved in any item you dispute, detailing the error and the corrective actions you have taken. That way you'll have both the credit bureau and the credit grantor working on correcting the inaccuracy.
