  Circumstances For A Free Credit Report

There are certain circumstances in which a consumer is entitled to one free credit report. They are as follows:
  • If you have been denied credit or employment due to information contained in your credit file, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report for the 60 days following your denial;
  • If you have filed a dispute concerning information contained in your credit report and the credit bureau's investigation yields a change to your credit file, you must be sent a new copy of your credit report at no charge;
  • If you certify in writing that you are unemployed and intend to apply for employment in the 60-day period beginning on the day you make the certification;
  • If you are a recipient of public welfare assistance;
  • If you have reason to believe that your file at the agency contains inaccurate information due to fraud, or
  • If you are a resident of Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Vermont, you may receive a free copy of your consumer credit report once each year, and if you are a resident of Georgia, twice each year.

If none of these situations apply to you, you may always order a copy of your report for a reasonable fee, usually around $8.00 (although some state laws require credit bureaus to charge their residents lower fees). You can order your report by contacting any credit bureau (listed below) or you can order it online right here at http://www.creditmatters.com; check the Reports & Services options on the left-hand navigation bar.
